Urban Vista Design Guide: Circulation and Comfort Clearances for Vancouver Custom Cabinetry

1. Core Work Aisle Standard

Standard Clear Width: 42″ – 48″ (1070 mm – 1220 mm)

Applicable Scenarios: Suitable for both single and multi-cook collaborative modes.

This is the “Golden Scale” for open-concept kitchen designs in Vancouver. Unifying the clearance of the work aisles and the space behind seating areas within this range ensures multi-functional compatibility between static and dynamic states.

2. Seating Area & High-Frequency Circulation

Standard Clear Width: 44″ – 54″ (1120 mm – 1370 mm)

Applicable Scenarios: Areas behind dining tables or islands that serve as primary family traffic paths (Main Passage).

With one person seated, this range ensures a second person can pass smoothly at a normal gait. Even during high-frequency usage, such as social gatherings, passersby do not need to interrupt seated individuals or turn sideways to pass.

When a person is seated and there are cabinets or drawers behind the dining area, a 54″ distance ensures drawers can be fully extended for access while the seat is occupied.

Note: If base cabinet depth exceeds the standard 24″ (e.g., using 30″ or 32″ extra-deep cabinets), this distance must be increased accordingly by 6″ (150 mm).

3. Mandatory Boundaries

Physical “Red Lines” for Spatial Tolerance — Minimum: 36″ (915 mm) / Maximum: 60″ (1520 mm)

Any clearance in core operational areas below 36″ will lead to a direct sense of spatial oppression and will make it difficult to move large appliances out for future maintenance or component replacement.

Excessive clearance is not an advantage. If the distance exceeds 60″, the path between kitchen appliances and work surfaces becomes too long, causing a “break” in the cooking workflow and severely reducing operational efficiency.

4. Special Active Bypass Clearance

Total Clear Width Standard: 54″ – 68″ (1370 mm – 1730 mm)

Applicable Scenarios: When a dishwasher or deep appliance is in a fully open loading state, and another person needs to pass simultaneously from the front or rear.

Tiered Specifications: * 54″ (1370 mm): Compact Collaboration Baseline. Allows the dishwasher to be open (approx. 26″) while another person brushes past sideways.

68″ (1730 mm): Premium Spatial Standard. Based on the 40″ of space required for an operator to crouch and load, plus 28″ of completely unobstructed passage space. This standard ensures that 100% circulation efficiency is maintained in the main family traffic path during dishwasher operation.
